Puzzle 84 – “Theme-Free in 2023”

Just as the title says, we’re into the new year, and still mostly themeless around these parts. Seed entry here was the spanner at 37-Across: remember those CD double-albums that used to come in the jumbo-sized jewel cases that couldn’t fit neatly into the slots of most racks? But I digress.
Favorite clues here: among the many musical moments in this puzzle, 30-Across, as well as the hat tip to my dad’s favorite musician at 23-Down.

Another very good puzzle, and as usual, you include some interesting historical fact that compels me to look up. Bree Newsome’s story is one I hadn’t heard of before, but I’m glad I now know about it!
