This one’s technically a themeless, as this site’s puzzles usually are. But there is an unintentional quasi-theme here, turns out, as several long entries point to the distant past (the recency of 18-Across momentarily aside). Seed entry here was 27-Across, with a clue pointing to a textual detail that doesn’t get enough attention. Other favorite clues here: 13-Down, 19-Down, and 49-Across.
