Puzzle 17 – “Left to My Own Devices”

A new themeless this week. Seed entry here was 1-Across (a longtime favorite of mine, and the source of the title); you might also detect a different musical mini-theme running through a couple entries. This puzzle includes what might be my single favorite clue I’ve ever written (at 12-Down) as well as some good trivia to liven up some short fill at 25-Down and 61-Down. As a fan of the problematic film, In the Heat of the Night, I appreciate the key quote of the film’s inclusion. Easier to fit than “You saw it. What you gonna do about it?” Also, the Heard it Thru the Grapevine trivia is indeed a gem.
Said it before, will say it again:
All of my cultural reference points are before my time.
