PUZZLE 163

Puzzle 163 – “Sticky Situation”

puz here / pdf here / solution here

Some crosswording news, yall, before we get to this week’s themeless: if you’re a subscriber over at Defector, I’ve got this week’s (timely) puzzle over there. And this Sunday (July 28) will be my debut puzzle in USA Today, which you’ll be able to solve on their site or over at Puzzle Society. I also had the good fortune this past Sunday to do pretty well at the online side of the Boswords summer tournament (major kudos to the Boswords team, who keep doing a great job running in-person and online tournaments simultaneously). You can catch the Twitch stream here, and if you’re interested, you can jump straight to the finals at about 4:35:00.

Whew. Seed entry (and title source) for this one is 34-Across, right at center. Favorite clues here are probably 5-Across and 1-Down for the lateral-thinking trivia moments. The fun fact at 47-Across was a great discovery while doing some clue research too.

Happy solving, yall. As ever, comments welcomed. Hope you enjoy.

  1. I was very happy to see you as the contributor for Defector’s puzzle this week. Nice to have two of yours to solve in a week!

  2. Good one thanks!

    11D was new to me.

Congrats on USA today! That’s wild. I remember you when…

  3. Thank you for another solid puzzle with no cheap fill, and I’d have never guessed that a group of ferrets is known as a “business”, but I did remember that Tom Hanks called his volleyball(?) Wilson, which I believe was the brand name and also the surname of his wife Rita.
And I can’t wait to do your JUL 28th puzzle in the USAT (and I’m sure it will get very good ratings!).
