PUZZLE 226

Puzzle 226 – “Have I Got Some Stories for You”

puz here / pdf here / solution here

We’re back to themeless territory!

Seed entry here: the spanner at 37-Across. Yes, I collect them. (Can we call it a collection if most of them were sent to me for free by publishers? Maybe.) Favorite clues: 21-Across (if you know, you know), and 31-Down for the fun fact. (I also feel the need to point out that even though this set of clues includes multiple references to theater of the absurd… whew… I’m doing fine, I promise.)

As ever, comments are welcomed, yall. Hope you enjoy. Happy solving, friends.

  1. good one thanks.

I thought 2D was great. Never seen that use before. Clever.

  2. You’ve introduced me to the word ‘grawlix’; I’d made it this far in life without having heard it before. I still own the 37-Across I purchased as an undergraduate lo these many years ago. Thanks for yet another terrific puzzle.

  3. I came across my 37-across (poetry!) as I have been packing up to move. I’m curious how many you have!

    • I have the last 5 editions (I think) of the American set, plus the last 2 of the African-American lit set. Some British. I’m fascinated to see what gets added to it and what gets removed over time (sometimes for good, sometimes for ill, in my view).

  4. Loved this one! Seemed like the difficulty was cranked up a notch… congrats on the great result at the MWXWT! I unfortunately wasn’t able to join virtually or in person, but I’ve got the puzzles to solve on my own when I get some time… looking forward to it!
